Voluntary or community groups wishing to run environmental projects in Cambridge from April 2017 to March 2018 can now apply for grants from this year’s Sustainable City funding round.

With funding of up to £10,000 per organisation available, the council is inviting expressions of interest from eligible local, non-profit groups whose environmental projects will help address the council’s own environmental objectives.

These objectives, as set out in the council’s Climate Change Strategy 2016-2021, and prioritised for the 2017-18 Sustainable City funding round include:

  • Reducing energy consumption and emissions from homes and businesses in Cambridge;
  • Supporting businesses to improve energy efficiency and increase waste reduction;
  • Reducing emissions from transport by promoting sustainable transport and encouraging behaviour change;
  • Reducing consumption of resources, increasing recycling and reducing waste;
  • Supporting residents and businesses of Cambridge to adapt to the impacts of climate change

During 2016-17 Sustainable City Grants are supporting a variety of projects including:

  •   Events and projects to encourage residents and businesses to reduce food waste;
  •   A home energy fair and ‘open eco homes’ event to raise awareness of how residents can increase the energy efficiency of their homes;
  •   Waste reduction projects, such as repairing and swapping used clothing;
  •  Producing soup at low prices from surplus food; and
  •   A workshop where veg boxes were made from recycled wooden pallets and locally grown, sustainable food was promoted.

Cllr Richard Robertson, Executive Councillor for Finance and Resources, said: “In previous years, the Sustainable City funding from the council has helped support some excellent schemes doing some important work benefitting the city.

“Local projects can play an important role in tackling climate change, cutting energy bills and helping to reduce carbon emissions.

“I would encourage interested groups to submit an expression of interest form as soon as possible in order to be considered for funding for 2017-18”.

Groups can apply for grants of up to £10,000, and expressions of interest need to be submitted by 16 January at 5pm.
