CambridgeIP is pleased to announce the publication of an extended and updated report Patenting flatland – Graphene: Exploitation Challenges and Opportunities. The report is free to download and use for 10 days. The report builds on research into the role of academic institutions in the graphene patent landscape recently published in Nature Materials in January 2012 and builds on CambridgeIP’s February 2012 report.
Our findings include that Samsung continues to top graphene patent league table by numbers of graphene patent applications filed. And Sungunkukwan University (SKKU) maintains its position as top university by numbers of graphene patent applications filed. As predicted in our last report, Manchester University has begun to file patent applications in the graphene space at an increased rate. However, Manchester’s graphene patent applications form part of a very small UK presence in the crowded graphene patent landscape which is dominated by players from the USA, South Korea and China.
“Graphene is an extremely complex technology space, requiring a diverse range of capabilities to deliver end-use products, cutting across many industry verticals” said Quentin Tannock (Chairman, CambridgeIP) in a recent interview, which has been made available online here. “This complexity and diversity, multiplied across a large number of industry value chains, results in a significant challenge for investors, policy-makers and companies seeking to secure future value. We focus on helping clients manage complexity, navigate the graphene matrix and accelerate their achievement of value” Quentin continued.
In addition to providing updated information and analysis, our report provides evidence of graphene patent applications which have been delayed for longer than is usual in patent offices around the world. Analysis of these long delayed patent applications can lead to interesting findings, including the detail of queries and possible areas of weakness in the inventions as claimed. Full details of all patent documents recovered in our IP Landscape® research, including long delayed patent applications, are made available in a companion patent dataset which accompanies our report, available here.
