It Takes a City were delighted when Abigail Owens, Dogs Trust Pets and Housing Regional Engagement Coordinator, visited Crossways (their winter emergency accommodation project).
Everyone knows how strong the bond can be between those experiencing homelessness and their animal companions. Indeed, some would rather stay on the streets than accept an offer of accommodation that doesn't include their dog.
At Crossways, they have worked hard to make the project dog friendly. Abigail visited as part of the Welcoming Dogs scheme to check that everything was in place to receive Dogs Trust accreditation.
"With our recognition as a dog friendly service, we can ensure that people in need of accommodation, who may have refused to take the offer of a room elsewhere because their dog couldn't accompany them, can finally get off the streets. In addition, our staff team strongly believes that dogs have a positive effect on the welfare of more than just their owners and this has certainly proven to be the case at Crossways".
The accreditation means that Crossways are able to welcome dogs in a safe and responsible way and can register any dog staying with them at a local vet for a general check-up and to receive free preventative treatments like flea and worming, neutering, microchipping, vaccinations, and any essential or emergency treatments.
Each dog will also receive a Christmas stocking and other treats to help make their stay comfortable.

It was clear from the beginning they were enthusiastic about our scheme and were keen to implement policies and procedures that allowed them to welcome dogs into the service, in a safe and responsible way. I thank them for their collaboration and the warm welcome when we visited in person. We even got to meet Lily, who’s currently living at Crossways with her owner. It was clear she was very happy there and well-loved by everyone in the service.’’
