Something jolly lovely happened this week.
The fact that it was fulfilling, uplifting, and a fascinating opportunity only made it better.
An executive from one of the biggest companies in the UK (FTSE 100 listed) got in touch through my website.
He’d read my book on Leadership Communication, and was very kind about what he thought.
Which was heartwarming in itself, but even better…
He wondered if he could hire me to come and do some communication teaching at his company.
We had a chat, made a deal, and all was very simple, straightforward, and splendid.
It’s generously paid, means a couple of days away in a lovely part of the UK I haven’t visited for a long time, and is a fascinating project working with very interesting people.
The point of this blog, however, is the way the opportunity came about.
It all stemmed from the book.
Writing it, and the others I'm lucky enough to have had published…
Has provided a happy income stream, created lots of similar opportunities, and proved very fulfilling.
So, I would highly recommend trying some writing.
But! I can hear what you’re thinking:
– I don’t have time to write a book
Which is the point I particularly want to address in this blog.
You do, you really do have time, I promise.
Because the world of publishing has changed so much in recent years.
First of all, gone are the days when a book had to be 50,000, or even 100,000 words.
With the advent of e-publishing, they can be much, much shorter.
Mine average around 15,000 words, which is far more manageable than used to be the case.
And if 15,000 feels like a lot, see it this way:
If you could write 250 words a day, just half a side of A4, then you would have a book in only two months.
Doesn’t sound like quite such a mountain to climb when you see it that way, does it?
Even better, such books are very popular.
There’s a big market for educational publications which are short, sharp and effective.
Perhaps because not many people have time to read tens of thousands of words in our busy modern age.
There are also plenty of publishers out there looking for material which might have a market.
So, if you have an insight into any field, whether it’s communication like me, marketing, entrepreneurship, health and wellbeing, and so many other potential fields…
I can highly recommend thinking about writing a book.
You wouldn’t believe the opportunities, income and - perhaps most importantly - the wonderful fulfilment it can bring.
