With work now underway to revamp the main auditorium and plans to build a new 200-seater roof top studio space – backed by a £16 million donation from Lord David and Dame Susie Sainsbury via the Gatsby Charitable Foundation – the project is a major investment in Cambridge’s cultural future. The refurbishment will modernise the theatre, improve accessibility and upgrade backstage and technical facilities, all while preserving the venue’s much-loved character.
The redevelopment represents a significant enhancement to the city’s cultural infrastructure, creating a more comfortable and inclusive space for audiences and performers alike. Better sightlines, improved acoustics and state-of-the-art technical capabilities will allow the theatre to present a more diverse programme, support emerging artists and strengthen its role as a key cultural hub.
As a registered charity, Cambridge Arts Theatre relies on the generosity of individuals and organisations to sustain its work and ensure that live theatre remains an accessible and inspiring part of Cambridge life. Fundraising is ongoing to complete the next phase of the redevelopment, including the new studio theatre.
Daniel Zeichner MP said:
"Cambridge Arts Theatre has been at the heart of our city’s cultural life for nearly 90 years, and this ambitious transformation will ensure it continues to thrive for future generations. It’s fantastic to see major investment in the arts, creating new spaces and opportunities for performers and audiences alike.”
Rachel Tackley, Creative Director and Interim Co-CEO of Cambridge Arts Theatre, added:
“We are thrilled to have Daniel Zeichner visit our theatre and see first-hand the progress of our redevelopment project. This transformation will allow us to enrich the cultural life of our city, and we are grateful for the continued support of our community, funders and leaders who champion the importance of the arts.”
