Local Paralympian Louis has a golden Rio games

Cambridge City Council has offered its congratulations to local Paralympian Louis Rolfe following his medal-winning exploits in Rio de Janeiro.

The 19 year old cyclist, a former recipient of the council’s Sir Arthur Marshall Future Champions grant, won a gold medal in the C1-C5 750m Team Sprint and a bronze medal in the C2 3000m Individual Pursuit. He also finished sixth in the C1-2-3 1000m Time Trial.

Louis, who is a sports studies student at Cambridge Regional College, is due to attend the Sir Arthur Marshall Future Champions ceremony hosted by Marshall for this year’s successful applicants, having himself received a grant in 2015.

The grants – which are managed and administered by the council – are awarded each year to outstanding Cambridge athletes aged 11-25, to help them achieve their sporting ambitions. Priority is given to people competing in Olympic and Paralympic sports.

Cllr Richard Johnson, Executive Councillor for Communities, said: “Louis has worked tremendously hard to get to this point and thoroughly deserves his success in Rio. We look forward to welcoming him back to Cambridge and hearing about his achievements.”

Next week 10 young Cambridge athletes will be awarded the Sir Arthur Marshall Future Champion grants for 2016, at this year’s award ceremony.

The 10 successful recipients of the grants have already shown huge promise, competing at either a county or regional level, in sports including athletics, goalball, trampolining, diving and golf.

The Sir Arthur Marshall Future Champions Programme is open to all athletes aged 11-25 years, to support their sporting talent, with priority given to Olympic and Paralympic sports.  The programme is open to able bodied and disabled athletes living in Cambridge, who are competing at county or regional level. Athletes can be awarded grants of anywhere between £100-£500, depending upon their standard of competition. Athletes must be competing at either county or regional level to be considered.

The Sir Arthur Marshall Future judging panel meets once a year (July) to consider applications.  Applications for next year will re-open from Monday 9 January 2017 and will close on 30  June 2017.

The Future Champions Programme has been supported by the Marshall of Cambridge Trust (in memory of Sir Arthur Marshall 1903-2007) for the last four years and will be supported by them for the next two years.

Sir Arthur Marshall was born in Cambridge.  He was an undergraduate at Jesus College and he was awarded a Cambridge University Athletic Blue in 1923 and 1924 for the quarter mile.  He was also a member of the British Olympic Team at the 1924 ‘Chariots of Fire’ Olympics.
