While traffic congestion appears to be increasing in and around Cambridge, there are suggestions, plans and visions being drawn up for a smooth-running transport system – from tunnels to drones, from Autonomous Vehicles to traffic management. This is your chance to come and hear some plans and ideas, taking in some leading technology.
Hear from RAND Europe about the types of transport needs – whether passenger or freight, long or short distance, leisure or business and the different type of technologies in development now that may have a substantial impact by 2035. These could be Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), next generation connectivity, user apps and big data, the Internet of Things for increased connectivity and traffic management, novel materials and sensors to reduce road wear and tear or automatically repair roads, creating less delays.

Closely involved with the Crossrail project, Professor Lord Robert Mair, Head of the Geotechnical and Environmental Group, University of Cambridge Dept of Engineering, will comment on the possibility of tunnels solving part of our transport problems in Cambridge.
Cambridge Consultants will show its Last Mile Delivery drone solution – a short video of which you can see here. The Greater Cambridge Partnership will outline plans already in discussion for the city.
The event will also feature the winners of the wayfinding hackathon taking place on 25th November as well as an exhibition of cars from Tesla (Model X pictured above), Citipods, electric bikes and many others.

Prof Lord Robert Mair: Prof Mair helped to establish the Centre for Geotechnical Process and Construction Modelling, the aims of which are to develop new research areas concerning innovative construction techniques. The main thrust of the research is in the areas of underground construction, earthquake engineering, environmental geotechnics. Could a tunnel under Cambridge be the answer to our congestion issues?
Charlene Rohr, RAND Corporation: Charlene will talk about RAND’s recent research on ‘Travel in Britain in 2035’ and how emerging technologies (including autonomous vehicles, IoT, novel materials etc) might be able to alleviate the problem.
Taking place from 3pm - 7pm at Block E, Postdoc Centre @ Eddington, 105 Eddington Place, this session - designed to give businesses, residents and anyone interested in this area a forum to share ideas and potential developments - is being run in conjunction with the Greater Cambridge Partnership, Smart Cambridge and AstraZeneca.
All are welcome to attend – this event is FREE for both Network members and non-members.
There is also exhibition space for companies and organisations who have ideas and may want to exhibit.
