Now in its fourth year, Cambridge Sustainable Food, Cambridge City Council and Cambridge City Foodbank are again working together to provide Christmas hampers for families facing food insecurity in the city. Each hamper includes seasonal vegetables, festive food and a toy or game. Last year we sent out over 650 hampers - this year looks set to be even more.
Many people attending community food hubs in Cambridge* said that the rise in food and energy prices has made it difficult to afford food and pay bills at the same time. People are scared of going into debt that they will not be able to pay off. At Christmas these worries increase as people desperately want to give their children gifts and buy traditional Christmas food.
Cllr Gawthrope Wood, Mayor of Cambridge said: “No-one should have to go without at Christmas. I am delighted to be able to support Cambridge Sustainable Food today, and that the council has been able to support CSF and Cambridge City Foodbank in the hamper appeal again this year, making sure that local families receive the food they need over the festive season as well as a toy or gift for under the tree. Having now run for four years, the Cambridge Christmas hamper project has supported thousands of Cambridge families who are struggling to make ends meet.”
