Mayor supports auction to raise funds for Syrian children and families

The Mayor of Cambridge is among local people supporting an event raising money for children and families affected by the war in Syria.

The Mayor, Cllr Jeremy Benstead, is attending an auction of promises at St John’s College, organised by the Rotary Club of Cambridge, on Monday (26 September).

Proceeds from the auction will go to two organisations. Cambridge Refugee Resettlement Campaign is a voluntary group working to welcome and support Syrian people arriving in the city through the government’s resettlement programme. ShelterBox is a charity which delivers aid including shelter and tools to families in Syria and in refugee camps to help them rebuild homes and communities.

Among the items being auctioned are holidays, tours, tickets for shows and sporting events, original works of art and a signed cricket bat donated by England captain Alastair Cook.

Cllr Benstead said: “I am delighted to be able to support this fantastic event organised by the Rotary Club of Cambridge.

“The funds raised will contribute to some vital work that is being done to help people affected by the horrific conflict in Syria, and to help Syrian people settle in to a new life here in Cambridge.

“Cambridge has a proud history of welcoming refugees of war from around the world.

“Events like this demonstrate that our city will continue to be generous and welcoming to all new members of the community who need our help, wherever they have come from, but especially those who are arriving in such difficult circumstances.”

All 140 tickets for the event have now sold out. People not attending the auction but wishing to bid for items can still do so online at the Rotary Club of Cambridge’s website: www.cambridgerotary.org.uk. The website is also still accepting donations.
