MP backs new mental health campaign

Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner will back a new campaign to promote good mental health in babies as part of the first national Infant Mental Health Awareness Week tomorrow (Friday) at the Brazelton Centre on Devonshire Road.

Mr Zeichner will meet Joanna Hawthorne, CEO of the Cambridge based Brazelton Centre, a national charity promoting an understanding of baby behaviour. Ms Hawthorne will explain the crucial importance of what happens to babies during pregnancy and the early weeks and months of life.

From birth to age 18 months, the brain makes around a million connections per second. This means early experiences shape a baby’s brain development and have a significant impact on their mental and emotional health.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: “Supporting new parents and their children is an investment in the future. Yet over the past few weeks I have met a series of Cambridge organisations concerned that funding cuts will impact upon the services they provide to parents.

"Public health funding is being cut and there is very little work happening on young children's mental health.

"We need to do more to support infant mental health as a positive, preventative public health strategy for future generations.”
