New scheme to help businesses cut costs and carbon

Is your business ready for a future without fossil fuels? Have you been asked by companies you work with what your carbon footprint is and how you need to reduce it?

low carbon

Questions like these will become commonplace as the UK tackles climate change.

A new scheme to support small and medium sized businesses to cut costs and save carbon has been launched by Cambridgeshire County Council.

The Low Carbon Business Support programme will offer support and guidance to businesses looking to take their first steps to reduce their carbon emissions, as well as those who have actively started their low carbon journey. Learning from the county council’s Smart Energy Grid Project at St Ives Park and Ride will offer real live case study information and site tours will be on offer.

The support begins with an in-depth business diagnostic, which will help identify key areas of support required. An intensive programme of support to help businesses pull together a low carbon action plan then follows which will include one-to-one support, workshops, seminars and showcase events. The project also aims to support businesses to build supply chain capability, capacity, leadership and new partnerships that can deliver decentralised energy projects.

The programme runs from June until February 2023 and is being led by Deyton Bell, in partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) and with support from the European Regional Development Fund. All the support provided will be free.

Councillor Lorna Dupre, chair of the county council’s Environment and Green Investment committee, said: “The Joint Administration has committed to putting climate change at the heart of the council’s work and to being more ambitious than ever before to tackle the climate and environmental crises.

“0ur recently updated Climate Change and Environment Strategy is a key part of delivering on that commitment, and includes supporting and engaging with businesses on climate change as one of the council’s top priorities.

“This programme will offer small and medium sized businesses the chance to work with experts in the climate change sector. Every business will need to change the way it is working in the coming years so this is a great opportunity to get ahead of the pack whilst we are offering this support at no cost.”
