The North Pole attracted more than 38,000 visitors last winter, and will be open on Parker’s Piece – which is managed by Cambridge City Council – across the Christmas and new year period until 4 January.

As in previous years, it will have a 600 square metre open-air ice rink as its centrepiece. It will also feature traditional fairground rides, which this year include a giant Ferris wheel, giving visitors the chance to take in views of the ice rink and fairground, and further afield across the Cambridge skyline. There will also be stands selling seasonal food and drink.

Following a review by the council, including a meeting in the summer with residents who raised concerns about some of the practical aspects of last year’s event, a package of four additional measures has been put in place this year:

  • In response to concerns about the size of last year’s site, the footprint of the attraction has been reduced by 40%;
  • There will be added protection for grassy areas;
  • The event site has more visually attractive timber clad fencing surrounding it, with viewing windows to be added to the fencing;
  • The council is closely monitoring the set-up of the attraction along with the operator of The North Pole – Icebox Ltd – to minimise any potential damage to Parker’s Piece.

Cllr Anna Smith, Executive Councillor for Streets and Open Spaces, said: “The North Pole has proved to be a very popular winter attraction for residents and visitors in recent years and we are delighted that it is back for people to enjoy this Christmas and new year.

“The council was determined to address issues from 2016, took concerns raised by residents last year extremely seriously, and officers have liaised closely with The North Pole to address these concerns.

 “The North Pole ice rink on one of our most historic parks has become a traditional part of Christmas festivities for many people in Cambridge, and we are determined to get arrangements right so it will be a big success again this year and in future years.”
