Business leaders have welcomed a new ‘one-stop shop’ website that has been launched to help make it easier to do business in South Cambridgeshire and to attract new firms to set up in the district.

Cambridge Plus’ brings together information about what the district can offer businesses, support available to help firms grow and tackle difficult periods, and a picture of what life is like in South Cambridgeshire – an area consistently voted in polls as one of the top places to live and work in the country.

By offering companies from the UK and abroad an easier way to “step-in” to the district, “sit-down” and look at how it is a business friendly area, and “set-up” by finding a business location or the support available, Council bosses aim to increase the number of firms choosing the area to do business and in turn create new jobs.

Cambridge Plus features case studies of leading firms representing key sectors found in the area, ranging from high technology and science, to agriculture and tourism. These real world examples show the range of companies that have already set up and are being successful in the area.

As a rural district made up of over 100 villages, South Cambridgeshire has in the past been associated with traditional industries, such as agriculture, but it also boasts over 18 times the national average employment in high technology sectors and four times the national average in manufacturing, due to the multi-million pound investments made by UK and international firms.

Housing, sport and leisure opportunities, transport links and local education information are also included in a lifestyle section on the new website as this has been identified by firms as an important factor when they choose where to set up and do business.

Businesses and anyone looking to set up a new company can now log on to www.cambridge-plus.com to find out more.

Cllr Nick Wright, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member for economic development, said: “South Cambridgeshire is consistently recognised as one of the best areas in the UK to live and work and is a hotspot for business. By helping firms have easy access to all the support, advice and information provided by us and our partners, we strongly believe we can help the area go from strength to strength and continue to play a key role in pulling the country out of the recession. As well as supporting existing businesses, the new website it is a great way for companies in other parts of the UK and overseas to step in, sit down and set up in an area with a thriving economy that is open for business.”

John Bridge OBE, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, said: “The support already provided to aspiring and growing businesses in the local area will be complemented by the launch of this valuable new resource. The barriers restricting growth and the success of individual business entities have been well-documented, but locally there is a positive feeling and confidence in the future of our economy is strong. It is therefore the optimum time for the launch of this new website to encourage new companies to settle in the area and support the much-needed future investment that will ensure the local economy develops and prospers in the future.”
