Public urged to have their say on Mitcham's Corner redevelopment

Cambridge residents are encouraged to give their views on initial proposals for the future redevelopment of Mitcham’s Corner.

A newly-published document from Cambridge City Council sets out a detailed ‘development framework’ based on the overall vision for the area, which is set out in the emerging Local Plan for Cambridge.

The area covered by the document is to the north of Cambridge City Centre, centred around the one way system where Chesterton Road, Milton Road and Victoria Road meet.

Mitcham’s Corner is currently dominated by a one-way gyratory traffic system introduced in the 1960s. The road layout currently means movement in the area can be difficult and confusing for pedestrians and cyclists, and that large parts of the vicinity are underused.

The Mitcham’s Corner Development Framework sets out three main objectives for the area, which were drawn up following workshops with local residents, businesses and interested groups.

The three over-arching objectives for the future development of Mitcham’s Corner are:

  • Creating a connected place
  • Improving the district centre
  • Creating places for people.

The document proposes achieving these objectives in a number of ways, including by potentially changing the road layout, reducing vehicle speeds, improving access and connections to the area and its businesses, promoting the ‘evening economy’, and creating new public areas.

Cllr Kevin Blencowe, Executive Councillor for Planning Policy and Transport, said: “Mitcham’s Corner is a unique part of Cambridge, home to some thriving businesses and a large community of people who use its facilities.

“However, over the years its potential has been affected by a road system which has become outdated and can be confusing to many people visiting the area.

“We think that this framework to improve Mitcham’s Corner will help the area meet its potential as a thriving local centre bringing people closer together, and as a gateway to the city centre just the other side of the river.

“We’d like as many people as possible to give us their views in the consultation starting soon, to help us shape the future of the area.”

The consultation starts at 9am today (5 September) and continues until 5pm on 17 October.

The draft document will be available on the council website at https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/mitchams-corner-spd, with hard copies also available to read on request from the Customer Service Centre at Mandela House, Regent Street, and Milton Road Library, Ascham Road.
