Referendum: UK to leave, but Cambridge votes to remain in the EU

In a local result which did not reflect the final outcome of yesterday's EU Referendum, where Leave won by 52% to 48%, Cambridge resolutely (73.8%) voted to remain in the European Union.

The Cambridge results for the EU Referendum held on Thursday 23 June were as follows:

Remain - 42,682 (73.8%)

Leave - 15,117 (26.2%)

Rejected ballot papers - 53

57, 852 ballot papers were issued. Turnout was 72.2%.

Claire Ruskin, Cambridge Network's CEO, commented:  "Cambridge Network will continue to work hard to help growth across the UK.

"We believe in collaboration and that the UK will need, even more than before, to continue to show exceptional world class products and services. The Cambridge region has shown capability to scale up and deliver these and will continue to do so."

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, made this statement: "We note this result with disappointment. My position on this issue is well known, but 52% of voters in the Referendum disagreed.

"We will work with our partners in business, research and academia, as well as our European partners and the Government, to understand the implications of this outcome."

Councillor Lewis Herbert, Leader of Cambridge City Council said: ‘Cambridge voters reached one conclusion on European Union membership yesterday and what is best for all of us here, but the rest of England and the UK has decided a very different future for our country and for us too.

"There will be major consequences for Cambridge, for our people and for our local economy.

"Leaving, along with the resulting change in national leader later in 2016, can be expected to challenge Cambridge across all fronts including local investment, our Universities, housing policies and much else.

"It is vital that there is a combined voice, standing up for our great city, and the City Council will be working closely with our two MPs and established partnerships across the Cambridge area and beyond to protect the best interests of our residents and businesses.  Britain will need a successful Cambridge even more outside the European Union than in.'
