Residents dig deep to raise thousands for local charities

Caring tenants at some of Cambridge City Council’s sheltered housing schemes have raised the remarkable sum of almost £7,000 for deserving charities in recent years.

Over the past five years, tenants raised a grand total of £6,999.34 for their chosen charity for each year: East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, Make A Wish Foundation, Magpas, Help For Heroes and East Anglia Air Ambulance. This year’s charity will be MIND, the Mental Health Charity.

Sheltered housing tenants regularly participate in a variety of events and activities, including live musical evenings, 1940s and VE Day celebrations, fetes, baking days, coffee mornings, raffles, quizzes and take pleasure in also raising money for charity.

The council manages 13 sheltered housing schemes around Cambridge, which provide a range of comfortable and convenient accommodation for people aged over 60, and regular opportunities for socialising and taking part in activities.

Each of the schemes are managed by an Independent Living Facilitator and other staff, who are in regular contact with the tenants to ensure they have any support they might need to make the most of life there.

Cllr Kevin Price, Executive Councillor for Housing, said: “Raising £7,000 over the last few years is a magnificent effort from our sheltered housing tenants.

“Their fundraising also reflects the sheer variety of activities available to tenants in the council’s sheltered housing.

“Our sheltered housing schemes are not just about providing comfortable homes for people – we also work hard to help people in later years keep active, healthy, and independent, by reducing any sense of isolation, and creating a real sense of community.”
