Salivary melatonin assay validated for use in the Salimetrics laboratory

The involvement of melatonin in so many fields of study including stress, insomnia and sleep research should make this newly validated saliva assay a valuable addition to the Salimetrics laboratory.

The minimally invasive salivary assay will be used for melatonin testing with customer samples in the Salimetrics Laboratory. Customers who are interested in incorporating salivary melatonin into their studies should contact Salimetrics for additional information.

Salimetrics has completed a CLIA-level validation of a salivary melatonin EIA kit from Bühlmann Laboratories AG, Schönenbuch, Switzerland. The Bühlmann melatonin kit will be used for testing customer saliva samples in the Salimetrics Laboratory. The process of validating the kit involved checking linearity, spike and recovery, accuracy and precision, lower limit of sensitivity, functional sensitivity, assay drift, and stability to freeze-thaw cycles. By demonstrating that this melatonin assay meets the rigorous quality control parameters set forth by CLIA, Salimetrics can assure testing customers that their melatonin results will be reliable and accurate.

More analytical detail

Melatonin is a key hormone that is involved in regulation of the sleep-wake cycle, and it has also been shown to have significant antioxidative properties. Studies exploring the functions of melatonin in the body are numerous, due to its involvement in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, stroke, epilepsy, migraine and cluster headaches, and psychiatric diseases. Once secreted into the circulation, melatonin diffuses readily into saliva, where it can be measured non-invasively. (Cajochen et al., 2003; Claustrat et al., 2005)

According to Eve Schwartz, Chief Technology Officer at Salimetrics, the work with the melatonin kit “has provided data on normal salivary ranges in humans and has confirmed the expected low mid-day levels and high late-night levels. The involvement of melatonin in so many fields of study should make this newly-validated assay a valuable addition to the Salimetrics Laboratory.”
