The Cambridge Cluster Map (CCM) is a “big-data” resource which will make doing business in and with Cambridge easier and more transparent for a wide audience, from companies looking to attract customers, investment and top talent, to graduates looking for the right job, from journalists or government officials to investment banks and M&A teams. The Map was launched on Friday (16 November) at the University’s Computer Lab as part of the Silicon Valley Comes to the UK event.
People have been telling the story of the Cambridge Phenomenon since the 1970s but now, for the first time, the data will tell its own story in another world first for Cambridge.
- Who are the hypergrowth companies that I should be investing in?
- Who’s on the management team of the leading companies – and how am I connected to them through my own network?
- Who’s looking for team members with my skills and experience?
- How many billion dollar companies are there in Cambridge and which are the next ones?
These and myriad other questions can be answered by the CCM, the simple, intuitive interface of which belies the complexity of the number-crunching going on below the surface and the wide array of data sources (including the Cambridge Network) on which it draws. Rich data is provided by companies including Linkedin, Duedil, the University of Cambridge and leading Cambridge trade bodies.
The Cambridge Cluster Map is a not-for-profit initiative spearheaded by alumni and leaders in the Cambridge community to help support the companies in Cambridge that are scaling their global operations: this genuinely useful resource with groundbreaking technology behind it has been developed by Trampoline Systems (founded by two Cambridge Alumni from St. John’s College), the team behind the Tech City Map, but its functionality significantly outstrips that of its predecessor.
George Freeman, MP and Advisor to the Government on Life Sciences commented, “The Government is committed to developing the UK’s innovation clusters. What is a cluster? A low risk place to do high risk business. Cambridge’s world class science, venture community and facilities make it a global hub of innovation. The Cambridge Cluster Map is powerful because it demonstrates the richness of this City region and its attraction to the people who take the risks that drive innovation as a great place to live, study, work and build innovative ventures.”
Professor Lynn Gladden, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of Cambridge adds, “The University has been a proud supporter of the Cambridge Cluster Map from the start. It’s important for us to see how much wealth and employment is created by the cluster that we are part of and a contributor to. From now on, up to date information on how our high tech spin-outs in the area are doing is just a few clicks away.”
Charles Armstrong, CEO of Trampoline Systems adds, “The global competitiveness of a cluster increasingly rests on the quality of data available to internal and external stakeholders. With its wide range of source data and real-time analysis, the Cambridge Cluster Map sets the bar to which all other cities must now aspire. The project provides a unique demonstration of how Big Data can help an entire community to prosper. Trampoline Systems is honoured to have created the technology platform for the project.”
