The company is collaborating with Gardeners Beehives, which is undertaking one of Europe’s largest honeybee data collection projects to understand how honeybees regulate their colony numbers and will use the data to implement strategies to reverse the decline of honeybees in the UK.
Alongside the beehives, Welch’s Transport also hopes to encourage more local wildlife to thrive by protecting and promoting wildflower growth around the verges and green spaces as well as installing bird and bat boxes in the trees onsite.
Chris Welch, Commercial Director at Welch’s Transport comments: “We don’t have a lot of green space on our site but, where we do have greenery, it is important to us to manage it effectively and in a way that encourages and promotes biodiversity. Our Biodiversity Pledge is part of our broader sustainability vision for the company, and our ambition to provide sustainable supply chain solutions to businesses in Greater Cambridge.”
Welch’s Transport recently launched its Net Zero service, which offers emission-free, last-mile deliveries to companies in Greater Cambridge to reduce congestion, improve air quality and help businesses meet their Net Zero goals. At the core of the service is one of the UK’s first fully electric Heavy Duty Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and the region’s first emissions-free urban consolidation centre.
In addition to helping organisations meet their own sustainability goals, Welch’s Transport has also enhanced its own efforts to improve the sustainability of its sites through a number of projects including an extension of its solar estate to efficiently source energy to power the EV supercharger at the depot and creating an underground 1-acre water reservoir for its lorry washing. These practices have saved 135 Mwh of energy and saved 3 million litres of water since 2016.
