The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is seeking to appoint a Teaching Associate (Modern Chinese History) from 1 September 2025 until the 31 August 2027, to provide temporary cover. The role is open to those with a primary research interest in modern Chinese history (any period from the late 19th century to the early 1980s). The sub-fields are open: cultural history, social history, intellectual history, global history, etc. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and supervising MPhil dissertations. The successful candidate will also be expected to play a part in the administrative duties in the Chinese Studies subject group.
Candidates will need to show evidence of the following qualifications, skills, and experience:
- A doctorate in a relevant subject area (or clear evidence that completion of such a doctorate is imminent);
- Evidence of ability to teach modern Chinese history effectively and at all relevant levels;
- Native or near-native fluency in Mandarin Chinese and proficiency in reading and using primary sources in Chinese (including classical Chinese when relevant);
- Evidence of ability to engage in high-level research in modern Chinese history, with publications and participation in scholarly activity commensurate with stage of career;
- Ability to play an effective role in the life and work of the Chinese Studies subject group and the Department of East Asian Studies;
- Ability to work as part of a team

- a two-page description of a research project beyond the PhD thesis, indicating the contribution of the proposed research to broader scholarly debates, and envisaged publication outputs from this project;
