Cambridge MP gets kite project off to a flying start

On Friday 6 September 2024 at 1.30pm, Daniel Zeichner, Member of Parliament for Cambridge, will celebrate the launch event of the Let's Go Fly the Kite initiative by adding a brick to a giant Lego sculpture of a new Science of Life Quarter in Cambridge.

This community-driven project, led by Together Culture Community Interest Company (CIC) in collaboration with Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), aims to transform Cambridge's historic Kite neighbourhood into a hub for inclusive economic development and citizen-led enterprise. The Lego model will visualise what the project’s future home will look like.

Backed by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the Let's Go Fly the Kite initiative will kick off with a six-month citizen science project to uncover and document the rich history of collaboration and entrepreneurship in the Kite area, once known as Cambridge's second city centre. This project will train local residents as oral historians, host community tea parties, and create a "human map" living archive in partnership with ARU's Story Lab. The project will culminate in a Festival of the Kite in February 2025, where the community will co-create a new experience economy enterprise aimed at expanding Cambridge's narrative beyond its traditional university ties.

Daniel Zeichner said, "I am thrilled to launch the Let's Go Fly the Kite initiative. The vision to create a Science of Life Quarter in Cambridge's historic Kite area is an excellent way to foster inclusive economic development. I look forward to seeing this project come to life and to participating in this exciting journey alongside the residents of Cambridge. It’s all systems Le-go!”
