New agreement with the British Library: Cambridge Network web archives

The Cambridge Network and the British Library have agreed to work together on archiving periodically the websites of Cambridge Network members in the national UK Web Archive. Cambridge Network member sites will be a valuable addition to the archive, documenting the evolution of the Cambridge phenomenon and providing a unique record of the products, history and relationships between member organisations.

The UK web archive is a selective archive comprising archived copies of websites of national cultural and research relevance. Websites which demonstrate innovative use of technologies are prioritised for selection and the inclusion of Cambridge Network members’ sites will support this prioritisation. Archived copies of Cambridge Network members' websites will be available from the UK web archive long into the future.

The collection process is fully automated, deploying a number of web crawlers to automatically crawl sites and harvest copies of content directly from servers. Members are welcome to link to the legacy content in the web archive from their live sites, should they wish to do so.

Claire Ruskin, Cambridge Network’s CEO, said: “We would like to encourage all members to take part in this collaborative initiative which will be used by researchers for years to come.  If you do not want your website archived by the British Library, you can opt out by contacting web-archivist@bl.uk and stating the URL of your website.

“If you have any questions, please feel free to make contact with the British Library.  More information about the process is available from the UK Web archive site at http://www.webarchive.org.uk/

“In addition to this new British Library project, Cambridge Network has been asked to store many documents from past thinking and predictions for the future.  We will put these on our new website which is seen as a valuable resource for Cambridge and easier to access by businesses than university or public sector locations.”

If you have any thoughts on this, please make contact with Claire on claire.ruskin@cambridgenetwork.co.uk or Judi Coe, Cambridge Network website editor: editor@cambridgenetwork.co.uk
