Startup Masterclass and CfEL provide advice on how to build and maintain successful teams

Time and time again, a recurring theme of early-stage companies regards the strength of the project and/or founder team. Building a good team is critical at the beginning, but it is just as vital once a business becomes an established SME.

Startups and early-stage businesses need a strong and motivated team to succeed. Time and time again, not thinking through the implications of growing a business can have huge impact at a later stage. Building a good team is critical at the beginning, but it is just as vital once a business becomes an established SME.

As part of its programme of evening seminars, the next event  on Monday (23 January)  will focus on the experience of building and maintaining a successful team from two points of view, the early-stage startup and the established SME. Our speakers will be Simon Jones (Founder, Studio24) and Benjamin Wirtz (Founder, Handy Elephant).

During the talk the two speakers will deal with the following aspects

  • How to build a team and work together?
  • Who should I get involved in my business?
  • What changes when I hire an employee?
  • How do I handle strife with cofounders?
  • How to delegate?
  • What are the issues to grow from 1 to 5 or from 5-50?
  • This interactive session aims to inspire both those involved with early stage companies and those working in established startups & SMEs, arming them with key advice they can take away and apply to their own context. There will also be plenty of time for Q&A thus giving the participants the opportunity to put their own burning questions to the speakers.

The Startup Masterclass programme is funded by IdeaSpace Enterprise Accelerator, and provides support to early-stage businesses throughout the East of England.

The Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School (CfEL) is the Online Delivery Partner for the programme, and will collaborate in organising two live-streamed events in 2012, of which this is the first.

“Cambridge is a hotbed of innovation, but - as many startups have found to their cost -simply having a great idea is not a guarantee of success,” said Mauro Ciaccio, organiser of the Startup Masterclass programme.

“What we aim to do with this programme is provide a combination of inspiration and practical advice to nurture startups and help them thrive and grow. The partnership with CfEL will allow us to reach a much wider audience, and also provide valuable online video resources available via the CfEL website.”

“The Start-up Masterclass progamme provides a resource for the region’s new entrepreneurs,” comments Dr Joanna Mills, Deputy Director of CfEL. “Through each event, attendees will be able to connect with the real experiences of entrepreneurs who’ve already negotiated the challenges of start-up – a valuable learning opportunity.”
