Make a Difference: Become a Mentor with Form the Future

Have you ever wanted to make a positive impact on a young person’s life? Mentoring could be the perfect opportunity. Recently, I had the chance to speak with Sonny Kurmi, a Chartered Financial Adviser at S K Wealth Solutions, who has been mentoring with Form the Future for just over a year.

Sonny reflects on his own school experience, admitting he was loud and disruptive. Fortunately, a mentoring opportunity came his way, transforming his educational journey. Inspired by the impact it had on his own life, Sonny decided to give back by supporting young people in his community.

Starting work at the age of 14, Sonny’s career has spanned roles from a shop assistant to financial positions in three different countries. Each job has played a crucial part in shaping his personal and professional growth. His experience ranges from honing communication and customer service skills as a shop assistant to developing networking and relationship-building abilities while living abroad. Mentoring, in particular, has taught him how to step outside his comfort zone.

Sonny enjoys many aspects of mentoring such as making a difference in student’s lives, seeing their progress and receiving their feedback. He describes seeing the students’ transformation from the first session to the final session is the most rewarding aspect of mentoring. The changes in students’ perspectives and attitudes during the sessions show the impact mentoring has on them. Feedback from his recent group at Melbourne Village College highlights the positive impact when the students were asked what they gained from the Form the Future mentoring programme:

“Growth mindset, learn about opportunities. Friendly people, comfortable, never feel judged.”

“more confidence”

Euan Willder, Assistant Principal at Melbourn Village College, observed that the mentoring sessions had a positive impact on participating students. He noted significant improvements in their confidence and career readiness. Euan praised the contributions of Sonny, highlighting his ability to create rapport with students and effective guidance.

“The mentoring sessions have had a tremendously positive impact on our students,” said Willder. “Sonny’s approach resonated well with them, and we would love to have him back again if possible.” This feedback underscores the effectiveness of the personalised support provided through Form the Future’s mentoring programme.

Mentoring benefits not only the mentees but also the mentors. Sonny notes the learning exchange that occurs between mentors and students, with students offering fresh perspectives. Mentoring has helped him grow personally by enhancing his ability to simplify complex topics, adapt his communication style, and understand the technological and social changes affecting today’s youth.

When asked for advice for potential mentors, Sonny simply says, “Do it, have fun…be yourself and you will learn from the students.”

Form the Future’s mentoring programme is a six-week programme delivered once a week for an hour to secondary school students across the region and is funded by Greater Cambridge Partnership, Ely Food Bank, and previously Cambridge Community Fund. Volunteering may align with your professional development, showcasing your community involvement and demonstrating the practical application of your skills.

Consider joining Form the Future as a mentor and make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people.
